The World Is Yours – a documentary about hip-hop and the internet

“The World Is Yours” is a documentary about how hip-hop’s use of the internet revolutionized the music industry. Narrated by Issa Rae (The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl”), the film focuses on the rise of artists like Wiz Khalifa, Lil B & Odd Future. It features these and other artists, as well as industry insiders like Devi Dev and Rostrum Records’ Benjy Grinberg. After four years of development and filming, The World Is Yours is in its final stages of production – filming final interviews and wrapping up shooting. An abdridged version of the film was broadcast in French on television on July 4, 2014 and they are currently working on getting a US/international version with bonus material. Check out the trailer below & also go to the kickstarter for more info & to support this documentary. I believe it’s something that will be significant to our generation.

New Music: Stargroves!!!

We at Brick To Ya Face are always interested in hearing fresh new music from talented, young artists. We came across a New York-based band called Stargroves that is making solid and infectious  indie-pop songs. Check out their latest single called “Westjords”, featuring guest vocals from actress Abigail Breslin (you know, the cute little girl from Little Miss Sunshine and Zombieland). Now 18, Abigail’s recent venture into singing is a successful complement to  Stargrove’s Teddy Watson’s light and airy vocals.

Stargrove’s self-titled debut album is planned for release on July 22nd, 2014.

Check out their video for “Hats in the Air”, which is a tribute to  the cult classic film Harold and Maude.

Pour Vida Zine Issue #4

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Many of you may have heard the name Faimkills on our site over the years. We have been supporting him since his first mixtape,A Thought Ghetto Messtape in 2009. What many of you may not know is that while he was putting out music and performing, he was pursuing a dual M.A./M.F.A. degree for English and Creative Writing.
Having finally completed this, we are excited to see him put forth his best efforts into his rap career. We also understand that he has a deep love for writing as an art and in 2012, he co-founded a D.I.Y. lit zine with long-time friend, fellow I.E. native, and colleague Danny De Maio called Pour Vida.
The premise behind the collective’s zine is to showcase writings of various genres (along with Black and White artwork and music) from writers looking to get a taste of publishing outside of the industry. The zine is a digital, quarterly release, with an anticipated print-version of a yearly anthology.

The League – Pound Cake Remake (free download)

Your favorite LA rhyme twosome “The League,” bring you another dope remake. This time Drake’s Pound Cake record inspired the tandem to tap into their lyrical prowess once more. With no use for a hook, the duo uses the length of the track to inform any would-be naysayers of their ability to iterate their confidence via complex metaphors and ear-catching cadences. This track serves as a promotional item as they prepare to drop their next full-length EP.
